Round solid wood stools are among the most famous and instantly recognizable designs. Though small in size, they are highly expressive in form, and today they can be found complementing projects by Pierre Yovanovitch, Olivier Dwek, and Giancarlo Valle, as well as gracing the interiors of collectors. Throughout the 1950s, Charlotte Perriand created several variations of the solid wood stool, differing in height, shape, and number of legs.
The simple outlines of the stools reflected Charlotte Perriand's fascination with organic shapes and natural materials. The main source of inspiration was the traditional architecture and furniture of Alpine villages (hence the name Berger — fr. "the shepherd"). In the low-cut version, first presented at the Synthèse des arts exhibition in Tokyo, the sculptural organics of forms combined with a strong Japanese influence. This size only contributed to the success of the model: in addition to its main function in the interior, it could serve as a coffee table or side table.
